Cloth diaper covers come in many styles and materials. Gone are the days of "rubber pants." How many diaper covers do you need? It depends on how often you do laundry and the age of your baby, but a good number to have on hand is about six. What covers are the best? It depends on your needs, but the Bummis Super Whisper Wrap is a top seller and fits well over a variety of prefolds and fitted diapers. Overwhelmed by all the different choices for diaper covers? Let me break it down for you. The old "rubber pants" have been replaced by fabrics like Polyurethane Laminate (PUL). This is polyester fabric that is laminated on one side to make it waterproof. There are also covers made of a waterproof nylon. Covers made with PUL or nylon include, Bummis covers, Bumkins covers, Proraps diaper covers, and the Stacinator So Simple cover. Bumpy covers by Imse Vimse have a layer of organic cotton over top of the PUL, so the laminate is sandwiched between a layer of soft polyester on the inside and organic cotton on the outside. These types of diaper covers are trim fitting and are good for use under clothing. Proraps make a great newborn diaper cover because they have a little knotch cut out so they don't rub against the babies healing belly button. Velcro closing PUL diaper covers are also great because they make diapering with prefold diapers a breeze. You can simply fold the prefold diaper in thrids and lay it in the diaper cover. Then just set the baby on it and velcro it snugly to hold the diaper in place. No need for pins. See our diaper folding instructions for more info.

Fleece diaper covers are more breathable than PUL and are nice and soft, great for very chubby or rash prone babies. They are very easy to care for and can be washed with any load of laundry. Wool covers are the only all natural choice for a diaper cover. They are made with very soft wool, not scratchy like you may be thinking. They are very breathable and not as hard to care for as you may think. Wool and fleece diaper covers are bulkier than PUL though, so clothing may not fit well over them. They are great for night time diapering.
